LGBTQ+ representation in anime

Anime is full of various LGBTQ+ characters and here just some iconic ones from our favorite tv shows!

  1. Alluka Zoldyck (Hunter x Hunter): Trans woman
Although she is misgendered in the series by Illumi and Milluki (her brothers), Killua, her other brother, respects her identity and repeatedly refers to her as his sister.

2. Ryunosuke Katagiri (Devil’s Line): Trans man

Although a female born vampire, Katagiri identifies as male. However, after the six-month time skip, he begins wearing mascara, dresses, and jewelry—implying he is a transvestite (cross-dresser).

3. Hatsuharu Sohma (Fruits Basket): Bisexual

His main love interest in Fruits Basket is Isuzu ‘Rin’ Sohma, with whom he has an on/off relationship, but he states that Yuki Sohma is his first love.

4. Ryōuji “Ranka” Fujioka (Ouran High School Host Club): Bisexual AND drag queen

The doting father of Haruhi Fujioka also happens to be a professional cross-dresser and entertainer who goes by the stage name “Ranka”.

5. Yagyuu Kyuubei (Gintama): Bisexual and genderqueer

Originally brought up as male, Kyuubei later on decided to follow neither femininity or masculinity and instead live as simply “Yagyuu Kyuubei”.

6. Emporio Ivankov (One Piece): Genderqueer

Inspired by Tim Curry’s Dr. Frank-N-Furter role from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Ivankov is able to control the hormones of the human body, allowing for alteration of all physical aspects, including sex, growth, skin pigment and more.

7. Jakotsu (Inuyasha): Gay

Depicted as a stereotypically flamboyant homosexual, he is easily distracted by the men he is interested in and this causes endless frustration for Renkotsu (Jakotsu’s superior).

8. Chizuru Honshō (Bleach): Lesbian

A proud lesbian, she is extremely attracted to Orihime Inoue, who she nicknames “hime” (princess) and Inoue’s innocence paired with Honshō’s salacious nature create a hilarious dynamic within the series.

9. Shima Nishina (Kiss Him, Not Me): Pansexual

A rich and multitalented high school student popular amongst the girls, Nishina competes with four other boys to win Kae Serinuma’s heart.

10. Ash Landers/Angela Blanc (Black Butler): Intersex

When he reveals his true form, Ash Landers discloses that he is the masculine half of an angel, although he and his alternate feminine form, Angela, have separate personalities. In his female form, he is shyer and abides by the rules, but in his male form, he enjoys fighting.

Although not anime, an honourable mention also goes out to Ursula from The Little Mermaid, who was inspired by Harris Glenn Milstead (better known by his stage name “Divine” and as the “Drag Queen of the Century” according to People magazine).
