The new Starbucks #whatsyourname campaign wonderfully highlights the importance of names to the transgender community

As you are probably aware, Starbucks usually asks you for your name when ordering a cup of coffee. The new Starbucks ad depicts a trans teenager who uses his preferred name for the first time.

The validation that James feels after being called by his chosen name emphasizes just how important a transgender person’s name is to them. In this world, we are constantly surrounded by our name; to a transgender person, the name used can either cause feelings of acceptance or dysphoria.

At Starbucks, writing your name on a cup and calling it out is a symbol of our warm welcome. It’s a small gesture, but it’s symbolic of what we believe in: Recognition and acceptance, whoever you are, or want to be. We welcome everyone.

The campaign also includes several clips of trans people discussing their name.

Thanks to the message raised by short films such as these, everyone is reminded to make a special effort to address members of the transgender community by the correct names and pronouns!
